Recording a Podcast

Using a Lapel Microphone:

1. Have the microphone no more than five inches from your mouth.
2. Don't talk directly into the microphone.
3. Use a normal speaking voice - don't shout (will distort the audio).
4. Make sure microphone is securely attached to your clothing.
5. Don't cover the microphone with your hand or anything else-covering the microphone generally causes feedback.
6. Don't drop or bang a microphone-microphones use a fragile mechanism to perform the sound to electrical signal translation process and this mechanism may be damaged by physical shock.

Using a Hand-held Recorder:

1. Depending on the equipment, you should keep the microphone about four to eight inches from your lips.
2. Make sure the recorder is in a stable position.
3. Use a normal speaking voice - don't shout (will distort your recording).
4. Speak clearly. Not too fast, not too slow.
5. Try not to breath directly into the microphone and make sure that you don't have anything in your mouth (gum, pens, etc.) while using your hand-held microphone.
6. Minimize background noise. Try to make sure that there are no other conversations going on around you, or TVs or music playing in the background. Cell phones or fluorescent lights can also cause background noise while recording. Try to avoid using the recorder in close proximity to these objects.
